The Spotlight is on...Chakriya!

Chakriya at her school

Today's Spotlight was brought to you by Community Health Education PCV Caitie Shea from Kampong Cham province.

Chakriya is being spotlighted because of her personal determination and drive, along with her hope to improve education in Cambodia. I am privileged to work alongside Chakriya at Generation Hope Elementary School in Kampong Cham province. Together, we have developed my role as exercise and health teacher, in order to educate students regularly on fitness and wellbeing. Also, to inspire creativity and imagination we work together to include time for art during the school day. Recently, we planned a mural project for the whole school to collaborate on.

Caitie Shea and Chakriya at Generation Hope Elementary School

Chakriya is a role model for youth, especially female youth. She is a strong, confident woman and has worked hard to reach her current position as Managing Director at Generation Hope Elementary School. She provides an example for female students that they can aspire to be, and do, anything their hearts’ desire if they are willing to put in the hard work and effort.

Chakriya is only 26 years old and she definitely lives out her mantra of hard work and effort because she has already achieved so much. She was awarded a scholarship out of high school to attend CIST organization to further her studies. At this organization she was introduced to David Rim, the owner of Generation Hope Elementary School. He then encouraged her to attend the Royal University of Phnom Penh with his financial assistance. She studied Banking and Finance there for 3 years. Afterwards, she came with David out to Kampong Cham province where the school is currently located and began teaching just a few students underneath some banana trees. Today, the school has over 5 buildings and teaches students from kindergarten to 6th grade!

What kind of advice do you want to give youth of Cambodia?
It is really important to get an education!

What is your favorite thing about Cambodia?
My job! I love kids and I love to help them!

What is your favorite food?
I love all kinds of food but prahock! I do not like prahock!

As you can tell, Chakriya is extremely dedicated to her career and in being so, she is helping to inspire youth to work hard and pursue a good education. She is a role model and inspiration to all because of her dedicated heart and spirit, and her dream of giving the children of Cambodia the education they deserve.
